Our Roots
Our Story
Built in the early 1800s our farmhouse was one of the first built in the area. It’s original bricks were made from the clay soil on the property. The rock quarry on the property was created as they built the first major road in the area. Through the years it has seen periods of love and neglect. We are currently in the process of remodeling the old historic farmhouse on the property.
We are the second generation of Cawoods to call “The Farm” home. We love hiking on our farm while the dogs explore and walking down to the creek or rock quarry to cool off in the summer. We share our farm with chickens, honey bees, barn cats and our OTSCs. One of our favorite activities is sitting out under the old maple trees (the namesake of our farm) and watching the chickens as the dogs sunbathe. We feel so grateful to be able to spend time in a place that holds so many memories for our family.
A couple of years ago, our family took advantage of the opportunity to return back to our generational small family farm in western Kentucky. We dove right in and began planting black raspberry bushes in the garden, tending bees, and raising chickens. We quickly realized that we needed another member of the family that could help protect the chickens during the day and herd them into the hen house in the evening. We needed to be alerted when someone was heading down our long drive and a companion to join us in all our farm chores. We needed a “farm dog.”
As we began our search, we quickly realized that most of the breeds commonly associated with being working dogs were now predominantly being bred with “show standards” as their defining traits. Often, many of these traits seemed misaligned with what we needed from our farm dog. We recalled one particular farm dog of Rodney’s childhood (Shep) that was the quintessential “farm dog.” Smart and intuitive with a high desire to please. Gentleness with grit when necessary and the ability to “relax” and enjoy family companionship.
This began our the search for a breed of dog that resembled this beloved childhood pet and eventually led us to Old-Time Scotch Collies. After adopting our first OTSC (Rory) and experiencing what an intuitive and companionable dog she was from the moment we held her, we were convinced that we were uniquely situated to help revive this wonderful breed of dog.
A large part of what persuaded us to adopt two more OTSCs was our knowledge that we could ensure the best possible start for each puppy that is produced from our intentional pairings. We are so excited to provide more families with the experience of adopting an Old-Time Scotch Collie and ensuring this uniquely smart, friendly, and low maintenance breed continues to thrive.
